I'm kind of settling in here in Toronto. I have a home now instead of living out of the hostel, I have some friends and know my way around the city pretty well. I do need to make a few changes with work but I'll sort that out next week. This week however I was lucky enough to have my lovely friend Sara from the Sunny Coast come to visit me. She was actually in Vancouver for her friend Gabby's wedding and since I was here decided to fly over and spend a few days with me! Which was just what I needed. With the Olympics on this week I was starting to feel a little home sick seeing all the Aussies competing and missing the hype the Olympics brings to Australia. (The Canadians don't really care so much about the summer games they are winter specialists, although they have done quite well even if it did take them a week to win a medal!)Any ways enough about that back to Sara's visit. We did some touristy things such as Toronto Island and Niagara falls. But Sara also just enjoyed getting a hang of the great public transport system here as well as hitting the shops, since she has a 17 month old she rarely gets to shop in peace :o) However her stay was short and flew back to Vancouver on Friday for a few more days there before heading back home to take up full time mum status once again....
This is the front of my house in Toronto. I am living with four others, 2 guys and another girl. It's a very easy going house hold, although as you can see none of us are gardeners!
The heart of Little Italy, where Sara and I enjoyed yummy pasta and of course plenty of wine!
Sara enjoying the last of her hot dog brought from a street vendor before getting on the ferry to Toronto Island.
Looking back on the City from lake Ontario on a rainy day.
Sara proving she is very camera shy!!
Getting in touch with the feminine cow inside me.. ha ha, an unusual statue on Toronto Island.
Sara would actually rather feel the cow up!

Sara contemplating taking a dive into lake Ontario.
Toronto Island is pretty much just a massive park with a few "beaches" including a nudist beach, which we did not visit (thank god) It is actually only a short ferry ride out to the Island and on a warm day would be a great place to picnic and to chill out!
One of the things both Sara and I really wanted to do was take the short one hour drive south to see Niagara falls. We decided in the end to jump on a bus tour so we both could enjoy the day with out thinking about driving and traffic. The trip was actually fantastic and the falls were AMAZING. Well worth going to see... however the actual town of Niagara falls was a utter disappointment. It's so cheesy and over commercialised we actually felt like we had driven into movie or dream world (theme parks in Australia) when we went down the main street. It's very tacky and not at all what we expected to see on the edge of such a natural wonder of the world. But the falls them selves were something special and freakish to get so close to. The tour then took us down to a town called Niagara on the lake. This little village is so worth the look. It's cute cottages and massive houses are picturesque against the backdrop of well cared for gardens and streets. This is more of what we were expecting.
The Canadian Falls or the horseshoe falls. The volume of water flowing over the falls could fill 1 million bathtubs in a second!!
The smaller and rockier American falls.
Everyone is herded like cattle on and off the Maid of the Mist, which is the boats that take you right up to the falls. Everyone is issued with their own lovely and very fashionable blue rain coats to avoid coming back like a drowned rat.
Maids of the mist?
Getting in close to the American side of the falls.
The old boat battles it way against the current to the Canadian falls but gives ample opportunities for photos.
Another Maid of the Mist full of blue jelly babies!

Once you actually get in close to the falls this is pretty much all you can see.. Greyness, all you can hear is ROAR, and pretty much all you feel is wet. It's similar to being in a massive storm.
I thought it would be a good opportunity to wash my hair!
The sun shinning on the American falls.
Niagara Falls!

This is a shot of the top of the falls. The water was so powerful, pretty unlucky if you fell in, going over would not be much fun. Actually I think only 5 out of the 10 people that have gone over have survived. One nut case decided to ride a jet ski over and another a kayak. And no they are not some of the five that survived.
After Niagara falls we headed down the Niagara river to the Whirl Pool. The lines you can see there are actually for the cable car that goes over the top.

Even when she's behind the camera she can strike a pose ha ha!
The Botanical gardens clock!
Niagara on the Lake. One of Ontario's most expensive hotels The Prince of Wales Hotel. Rooms were recently renovated at half a million each!!

I loved the architecture of a lot of the houses in this town. A lot of them looked like ginger bread houses!
A boat on one of the most peaceful parts of lake Ontario.
My next trip I hope will be to Montreal in September when the weather should still be tolerable and the leaves will be changing colour. I also will have to do some serious winter clothes shopping to get my self prepared for the winter. I have been given loads of advice on how to cope with -30 degrees from my friends here so hopefully I will get through it. But honestly I can't wait to see some snow..
